Breakfast on a Monday? Holding onto summer like a stage five clinger with this peameal bacon roast. I did this peameal bacon on BBQ so I could continue relaxing as it smoked away low and slow. Bacon? Eggs? Hashbrowns? What is your go-to comfort breakfast?


I have multiple peameal bacon recipes on the blog but this peameal bacon roast is by far my favourite. Taken from its original packaging, smoked low and slow to absorb that amazing smoked flavour, and sliced to juicy perfection. This peameal bacon on BBQ will have everyone in your family smiling.


WHAT IS PEAMEAL BACON? Peameal bacon is a wet cured - unsmoked piece of pork loin. It is usually rolled in cornmeal and sold as a peameal bacon roast OR slices. It is often referred to as Canadian Bacon and found most commonly in Ontario, Canada. Unlike most bacon and hams, most all come pre-smoked, but not this cut of pork.

CANADIAN BACON vs. PEAMEAL BACON

Canadian bacon and peameal bacon come from the same lean pork loin. Usually not in the peameal bacon roast form, but rather cut in thick slices. People not from Canada often referred to peameal bacon as Canadian bacon and originates from The United States. Peameal bacon is also referred to as "Back Bacon" and is also the same.


WHAT YOU'LL NEED

A PELLET GRILL (I used my Louisiana Grills Black Label 1200) PELLETS (I used the Cherry blend from Louisiana Grills)

RUB (I used, Sweet Heat by Louisiana Grills)

WATER PAN (Optional, but recommended)


PREP TIME: 5 Minutes

COOK TIME: (APPROX: 2 1/2 hours)

DIRECTIONS

Preheat your pellet grill to 250 degrees. For this peameal bacon on bbq recipe, I do recommend a water pan. Whether you set one beside your roast or use a deep grated pan inserting some moisture to this lean peameal bacon roast is key.


Preparing your peameal bacon roast by removing it from wet-cured brining packaging, and score the top with a sharp knife horizontally and vertically. The scoring helps the roast cook evenly, insert more smoke flavour to the surface area, and make it look aesthetically pleasing to your guests. Next, lightly coat your peameal bacon roast in your favourite pork seasoning. I used Sweet Heat by Louisiana Grills.


Next, place your peameal bacon on bbq directly OR on your grated water pan. Smoke your peameal bacon roast for approximately 2 1/2 hours. THIS IS ONLY APPROXIMATE - all roasts are different in weight and size. You are looking for an internal temperature of 145 degrees for it to be fully cooked. Stop looking for peameal bacon recipes, because this is it the one you'll put on rotation. Slice and serve immediately.
