Smoked Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Casserole - need I say more? This homemade sloppy joe recipe combines the sloppy goodness of a homemade sauce with the crispy deliciousness of tater tots. This sloppy joe tater tot casserole WILL become a family favourite you put on routine weekly.
This Sloppy Joe Tater Tot Casserole has always been a recipe I've made inside. It wasn't until I got my first pellet smoker that I realized how much I love smoked potatoes and tried this one out on the grill.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
OVEN/STOVE or PELLET SMOKER (I used my Louisiana Grills Black Label 1200)
PAN or CAST IRON SKILLET (I used my Pitboss Grills cast iron)
PELLETS (If using a pellet smoker, I used Louisiana Grills Cherry for this cook)
INGREDIENTS
- Lean Ground Beef (1 1/2 lbs)
- Onion (1 medium, diced)
- Tater Tots (1 bag)
- Marble Cheese (1 1/2 cups, shredded)
- Cream Cheese (4 Tbsp)
- Pepper (to taste)
- Onion Powder (1 tsp)
- Paprika (1/4 tsp)
- Garlic (4 cloves, minced)
- Worcestershire sauce (2 Tbsp)
- Mustard (1 Tbsp)
- Brown Sugar (1/4 cup)
- Tomato Sauce (1 can)
- Corn (frozen 1/4 cup)
DIRECTIONS
PELLET GRILL
1. Preheat your pellet grill to 425 degrees. Using a cast iron skillet, on medium high heat, add the ground beef and onions. Cook for approximately 10 minutes or ground beef is completely brown. Closing the lid in between to get lots of smoke flavor in.
2. Add onion powder, paprika, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, and brown sugar to the meat mixture. Cook for a minute or two or until fragrant. Then add cream cheese, tomato sauce and corn. Mix thoroughly and simmer on medium heat for 15 minutes for all the ingredients to come together.
3. In the same cast iron skillet layer your sloppy joe tater tot casserole. First, add the sloppy joe mixture. Then layer cheese (use 1 cup) on top. Then add the frozen tater tots and top with the remainder of cheese. (PRO TIP: If you like crispy potatoes, do not cover your tater tots with lots of cheese and it won't get as crispy)
OVER STOVE TOP
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Using a medium frying pan or cast iron skillet, on medium high heat, add the ground beef and onions. Cook for approximately 10 minutes or ground beef is completely brown. Drain meat to remove all excess fat. Return meat to pan.
3. In a 9" baking dish (or in the same cast iron skillet), add the sloppy joe mixture. Then layer cheese (use 1 cup) on top. Then add the frozen tater tots and top with the remainder of cheese. (PRO TIP: If you like crispy potatoes, do not cover your tater tots with lots of cheese and it won't get as crispy).
